The Envirothon is a competitive learning event for high school-age
students to test their knowledge of environmental resources, including
soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues.
The Envirothon builds awareness. It helps show tomorrow’s leaders the
positive and negative effects that individual, business, and community
actions can have on the environment. Students who participate in the
Envirothon Competition learn:
• The differences between renewable and nonrenewable
resources
• Environmental interactions and interdependencies
• Agencies responsible for various environmental issues
• Careers in the natural resource and conservation field
Before competitions, under the supervision of a team advisor,
students spend time researching and studying to develop a greater
understanding of the interaction between humans and the environment. The
Northeast Indiana Regional Envirothon competition is normally held every
March at Merry
Lea Environmental Learning Center at Wolf Lake, Indiana. Wood-Land-Lakes
RC&D Education Committee is a sponsor of the Envirothon. Winning
teams advance to the State competition and finally on to the
multi-national competition.
